Leisure sports refers to people’s physical and mental exercise activities in their leisure time aimed at improving physical and mental health, enriching and creating life interests and enhancing themselves. In a sense, it is the result of the interaction between leisure studies and sport science.

With the strong support of the university, experts and scholars led by Professor Zhang Wenjian began to prepare for the application of leisure sports major. After 2 years of full preparation and program polishing, it has recently been successfully approved by the Ministry of Education, and will officially enroll 40 students this year. 

Founded in 1995, the College of Physical Education and Health of Wenzhou University now consists of four departments: Physical Education and Training Department, Physical Science Department, University Physical Education Department and Sports Venue Management Center, and three research institutes: Physical Culture, Physical Education and Training, and Physical Social Science. It has Sports Human Science Experiment Center, College Students Physical Fitness Testing Center, National Vocational Qualification Training base of Sports Industry, Sports Culture Research Base of General Administration of Sport of China and Wenzhou Key Laboratory of Health and Physical Fitness. The college has two gymnasiums in the north and south campuses, including basketball hall, volleyball hall, badminton hall, table tennis hall, martial arts hall, gym and aerobics hall. In addition, there are 3 tennis courts, 1 outdoor swimming pool, 39 outdoor basketball courts, 20 outdoor volleyball courts, 14 outdoor tennis courts, 2 400-meter standard plastic track courts and 1 football field. The gymnasium is equipped with professional gymnastics elastic floor, which is the only one in colleges and universities in the province, the aerobics gymnasium is equipped with professional aerobics elastic floor certified by the International Federation of Gymnastics (FIG), and the fitness gymnasium is equipped with top brand combination equipment. The allocation of teaching facilities is at the forefront of the province, and the advanced venue facilities provide material guarantee for the new leisure sports major.

At present, the college has 62 professional teachers, including 12 professors, 25 associate professors and 18 teachers with doctoral degrees. Many members of the discipline group have been selected as Millions of Talent Projects National candidates, Outstanding Mid-age Experts, Young and middle-aged Academic Pacemaker in Colleges and Universities in Zhejiang Province, Zhejiang “151” talents and have a number of national and provincial talents titles. In recent years, the research team has undertaken over 10 national projects such as the National Social Science Foundation and the National Natural Science Foundation, as well as more than 20 high-level research projects such as those of the Ministry of Education, the State Administration of Sports of China and the provincial social science foundation. Strong teaching staff can ensure the training quality of leisure sports major.
