The admission letter issued by Wenzhou University this year is special! Students can find the Chinese characters in the letter are produced by wood movable type printing, a traditional handicraft in Rui'an City. As of today, 5,200 admission letters have been printed, and the first batch will be sent out around August 20th.

With a history of more than 800 years, the wood movable type printing in Rui'an is the only wood printing technique known to be preserved and still used in China, and has high historical value. In 2008, it was included in the second batch of national intangible cultural heritage list. In 2010, "Chinese movable type printing" featuring Rui'an wood movable type printing was included in the "List of Intangible Cultural Heritage in Urgent Need of Protection" by UNESCO.

The Chinese characters in all admission letters will be printed by the inheritors in Dongyuan Village. It took more than half a month for the two inheritors to print 5,200 copies. Wu Kuizhao, one of the inheritors said that for the past 48 years, he had dealt with the production and printing of wood type for many books, but this was the first time that he produced the admission letter with wood type.

At the undergraduate admissions site of Wenzhou University, a pile of blue and gold admission letters are neatly placed on the table, ready to be sent. The letter adopts the pleated style of traditional Chinese documents as a whole. The cover is the gilded characters "錄取通知書 (Admission Letter)" and the university logo, and the back cover is the university motto "求學問是，敢為人先 (Seeking Truth and Making Pioneering Efforts)". The letter has five folds, including the admission certificate page, the President’s welcome, the university song, a landscape painting with Daluo Mountain as the base and university buildings as the foreground.

Jiang Yitian, a year-two student said: “We are surprised to see that the admission letter this year adopted the wood movable type printing. You can also listen to the university song by scanning the QR code with your mobile phone, and get a 3D bird's-eye view of the campus scenery surrounding Daluo Mountain. It is a combination of tradition and modernity. Freshmen will like it, and so do us."
